Fit 273 The #1 Mistake in Weight Loss

Finally, the biggest mistake in weight loss revealed!!  Do you think you know what it is? Learn how this one thing can change your body and your life!

First a quick review of the other four big mistakes:
#5-Getting information from wrong sources, such as ads, friends, social media, magazines
#4-Consistency, or lack of consistency!
#3-Doing cardio instead of weights for weight loss
#2-Having no plan for goals, workouts, nutrition, motivation

Now the BIGGEST mistake in weight loss……..Mindset!

Call it attitude……thought process……….self talk…..it’s what goes on in your head that determines your success in weight loss and in anything else!

We touched on this in previous episode and so many others!

This part of fitness is so vitally important that I wrote a book about it, do seminars on it and even started another podcast/website Strong and Powerful about it!

Without a doubt, this is the hardest part of fitness!

  • hardest to control
  • hardest to change
  • hardest to understand

Why is it so difficult to get the proper and productive mindset to reach a goal?

You have a goal, you want to achieve it…shouldn’t that be enough?  No, it’s not!   You say this goal is important to you, but then you find yourself slacking being “unmotivated,” doubting yourself then in a downward spiral toward defeat.

We’ve all been there, right? Maybe too many times.

Why is it that you can really want something, to lose weight, to fit into a dress, to change your body in some way……you really, really want this…..it’s very important to you….would change your entire life…….but it eludes you. That part is self-sabotage. Well, it’s a whole lot more, so make sure you check out my other podcast Strong and Powerful for more guidance on mindset.

Self-Sabotage

Why do you self-sabotage?  It often comes in the form of excuses and justifications! You do this because your subconscious mind, your inner self, does not want to change.

I know, you’re thinking, but wait! I do want this! Sure on the conscious level, yes, but deep down no. Here’s why: reaching this goal would change your life and although you want that, your inner self doesn’t because it’s scared to leave its comfort zone. The accomplishment you desire is a place you’ve never been and that frightens you on subconscious level so much that your inner self sabotages you so that you don’t change.

Your subconscious mind remembers every failure.  And with every failure, is some pain….sometimes a little, sometimes an overwhelming amount!!  Your subconscious tries to protect you from repeating this pain which is why it tries to get you off course with excuses and justifications such as

“I’m not meant to be a size 6” or

“It’s easy for other people.”

These unfounded thoughts ricochet through your mind at light speed constantly…..and you don’t even realize it!  There are two big problem with this: one is the repetition and two is the fact that our mind believes everything we tell it as the truth.

During the Fitness Makeover Live Seminars, attendees reveal some of their most common negative self talk and learn how to change it by rephrasing it into a positive present tense statement. Let’s do that for the phrases I just used.

First:
“I’m not meant to be a size 6.”

You want to change that to be a positive present tense statement.
“I am meant to wear anything I want and look and feel great in it.”
“I do not judge myself by a number, whether it be a dress size or the a scale.
“Numbers do not define me.”

Now let’s do the next phrase: (remember, positive present tense)
“It’s easy for other people.”
I do the best I can every day.
I work hard for what matters to me.
Everyone has struggles. I make the most of every moment to accomplish my goal.

It’s repetition of the wrong thoughts that hold you back from reaching your fitness goals.

The saying “Change Your Thoughts and You Change Your World” is true! Begin to recognize and even write down your negative thoughts or comments about yourself. Then rewrite as the positive present tense statement and read that daily, several times a day! This is the only way to train your brain as well as you train your body! Leaving comfort zone requires a leap of faith, trust in the process, I hope after this podcast you have a better understanding of your brain and the power of repetition for both good and bad results.

There is a lot to absorb in this topic. We will visit it frequently. Mindset is the reason why most people never significantly change their body, even the Biggest Loser contestants, gained it all back and more, and the reason is lack of mindset training.

If you find it difficult to make your positive present tense statements, then set up a half hour session with me. I can help your mindset get on the right path!

You’ll find more details and info in past episodes, and future ones, plus the podcast Strong and Powerful for more guidance on mindset.
